History

Karunalayam Hospital stays dedicated to serve our patients with compassionate care for the last 52 years. 'Care with Mercy' is our motto. Guided by the mercy and love of Lord Jesus Christ, we try to provide a family-centered care and service that improves the health of individuals and communities. This Hospital has been in the service of the healing sector since 1972 in the Carmelaram complex in the outskirts of the Bangalore city under administration of the congregation of the sisters of Nazareth. The congregation of the sisters of Nazareth had its origin in 1948 in Kerala. The apostolate of the congregation mainly concentrates on the total well-being of families, mainly in rural areas.

A branch of the congregation was opened at Carmelaram in 1972 with the assistance of OCD fathers. Realizing the health care needs of the poor people living here at that time, a dispensary with the permission of the Government of Karnataka for Health and Family planning was started in 1973-74. Later in 1988 it was upgraded to a 15-bed hospital with the service of Dr. Annamma Thomas- professor, Dept. of Obstetrics and gynecology of St. John's Medical College. She was the first bond doctor here and since then Karunalayam hospital has been one of the bond centers for the MBBS graduates of the St. John's Medical College. Carmelaram complex is technically considered under the BBMP Corporation, but in fact this area is still rural and undeveloped. The nearby villages still consider this hospital as their first contact place for their health issues. The beneficiaries of this hospital are mainly from the villages of Devarabisanahalli, Adi Sidhpur, Doddakanneli, Kodathi, Dommasandra and Gunjur-Palya. Here we provide pregnancy care and childbirth to poor women at the lowest possible cost. The hospital now works for the general public. The good health and wellbeing of the patients is our primary responsibility. We try to pour out Jesus' compassion and love to the patients who comes here. Responding the needs of now we have renovated the hospital with an OT, MICU, NICU, Labour room and rooms We also provide home health care services on demand. We strive to ensure a reachable and affordable health care to the poor people around here. We also provide free medical treatment for those who cannot afford the expenses.
